Abstract

Spindle S is driven by a belt B engaged over a pulley P. A fail-safe brake is mounted within the belt B to engage the perimeter of the pulley P. The brake consists of a yoke 1 on which is wound a coil 2, and an armature 3, pivoted at 4 and carrying a brake pad 5. Spring 6 urges armature 3 towards the pulley P. The armature 3 can be flat with a shaped brake pad 5 or curved to conform to the pulley.
