Binding is the process by which a source and a sink become associated and thus enabled to communicate with one another. This process is composed of two distinct stages: firstly, the source and the destination must be connected, and secondly, functions must be provided to permit the transfer of data along the communication path. The former is termed "connection" or "destination selection" and the latter is termed "function selection".

Binding is the process by which a source and a sink become associated and thus enabled to communicate with one another. This process is composed of two distinct stages: firstly, the source and the destination must be connected, and secondly, functions must be provided to permit the transfer of data along the communication path. The former is termed "connection" or "destination selection" and the latter is termed "function selection".

Connection is the process by which the system (which may be a complex network with various processors) recognizes that a particular end point (application or terminal) is requesting the use of some other end point, and remembers that the two parties are able to communicate or have requested communication capability. For example, application A may have requested the use of terminal T; if T is not currently in use, T is available to A and thus becomes connected to
A. If, however, T is already in use elsewhere, T is not available to A and A must await availability or not pursue its connection request. Note that this connection does not necessarily imply that a communication path is actually available at the time of the connection request for communication between the two end points, although, in general, the communication path is selected so that all processors in such a path are aware of the connection.

Function selection is the process by which the functions necessary to support communication along the path between two end points are selected, and associated with that connection in each element of the network in that communication path. Clearly, this selection is dependent on the capabilities of the destination, however, the selection is also dependent on the source, since sources may require different levels of support by the access method.
