Copper Mesa Heat Sink for Heterojunction Lasers

A mesa type heat sink is provided for a heterojunction laser that provides good thermal conduction, without interfering with the light emitted by the laser.

As seen in the figure, a heterojunction laser 2 is mounted on a copper block 4 that serves as a heat sink for the laser 2. Through appropriate masking, the copper block 4 is etched as shown by the dotted lines so that a mesa structure results. The light emitting from the laser 2 is not obstructed yet intimate contact with the heat sink 4 is attained. Such a mounting drastically reduces the operating temperature of a heterojunction laser.
