Small cobalt alloy particles are prepared by reduction of cobalt salts, mixtures of salts of cobalt and nickel, or salts of cobalt and chromium in a bath containing hypophosphite reducing agents.

Maintaining the bath at ambient temperature, using ammonium hydro-oxide to control bath pH, and palladium chloride as a catalyst, particles in the range of about 150 angstroms to about 300 angstroms in diameter are produced when in the range of about 150 angstroms to about 300 angstroms in diameter are produced when citrates are excluded from the bath.

The small particles exhibit coercivities of as much as 1900 oersteds, high surface areas and good dispersion characteristics when mixed with a polymer binder.
