Monolithic Light Emitting Diode Array

An integrated circuit monolithic light-emitting diode (LED) alphanumeric display is described, wherein a chip array is mounted on a transparent substrate having disposed thereon connecting contacts and associated driver circuitry with suitable decoding means.

Diodes 1 may be formed by conventional diffusions of P-type material 2 into an N-type substrate such as gallium arsenide phosphide 3 or similar III-V material and mixtures thereof.

Gallium arsenide phosphide substrates 3 are usually formed by vapor deposition of gallium arsenide phosphide upon gallium arsenide substrates 4 and advancing through a graded energy gap area 5.

Chip 6 having an array of light-emitting diodes 1 is mounted upon a transparent substrate 7 such as glass or any other suitable material having suitable connection metallurgy contained thereon, whereby the chip 6 is connected to an associated driver chip 8 having a power supply and decoder circuits.

This arrangement allows the monolithic LED array to be formed and operated without wire connections.
