Abstract

A volumetrically efficient random-access magnetic disc memory can be configured, by clamping large torroidal flexible discs 1 (e.g., oxide coated MYLAR* sheets; 0.0015'' thick; 30'' outer diameter; 10'' inner diameter) for corotation in a closely spaced pack. Plural access mechanisms 2-5 are arranged to be maneuvered relative to the rotating pack into spaces between randomly selected discs 1. The mechanisms 2-5 are carried on shafts 6-9, respectively. Shafts 6-9 are independently translatable and rotatable, to effect insertion of the respective access mechanisms into the selected spaces between discs 1. * Trademark of E.
