Electromagnetic Actuator Unit

The unit comprises a magnet core assembly 1 having twelve magnet cores 2 molded into assembly 1, twelve armature arms 4 and twelve coils 3 embracing parts of cores 2, providing a compact assembly.

Core assembly 1 captures a pivot shaft 7 on which all of the arms 4 pivot. A magnet armature 5 and an interposer spring 6 are inserts in each of arms 4. Each of magnet cores 2 have poles 2a and 2b, and coils 3 are disposed about poles 2b. When an arm 4 is in its full-line solenoid energized position, the lower portion of the associated armature 5 is in contact with a pole 2b, and the upper portion of the armature 5 is out of contact with pole 2a. The upper portion of armature 5 has a beveled end 5a so that there is a built-in gap between each armature 5 and the associated magnet core 2; and this gap is the same whether the arm 4 is in the energized or unenergized position.

Housing 8 is disposed about core assembly 1 and carries a forward stop 9 and a backstop 10 effective on all twelve of arms 4. In addition, housing 8 carries a return spring 11 for each of arms 4 and carries a MYLAR* strip 13 lying downwardly over backstop 10.

Core assembly 1 constitutes a single molding in which all twelve cores 2 are molded, providing close dimensional control between cores 2 and arms 4. Class- filled polyester for core assembly 1 provides excellent results. By unitizing each arm 4 and its armature 5, the interface between each solenoid coil 3 and the associated interposer spring 6 is reduced to one part, thus combining ease of manufacture and assembly with good dimensional control and a minimum of wear points....
