Abstract

This is a contact insertion apparatus for populating circuit boards with electrical contacts in strip form prior to soldering operations. Strip insertion by machine methods is particularly desirable since it facilitates the assembly, reduces the assembly time, and is therefore less costly.

Contact Insertion Apparatus

This is a contact insertion apparatus for populating circuit boards with electrical contacts in strip form prior to soldering operations. Strip insertion by machine methods is particularly desirable since it facilitates the assembly, reduces the assembly time, and is therefore less costly.

The apparatus comprises a head 10 and a clamping jaw 11 to register a strip of contacts 12 and provide clamping until the strip of contacts 12 is inserted into a board 13. After the clamping of the strip of contacts 12, the lower selvage strip 12a is removed and the head 10 moves in a vertical direction with the lower extremities of the individual contacts 12 on the strip entering their respective holes in the circuit board 13. The positioning of the board 13 is controlled through the medium of an X-Y table, not shown.

Subsequent to circuit board population with contact strips, fixturing is applied to register the upper selvage strips 12b for the solder cycle. Following the solder cycle, the upper selvage strip 12b is removed by a separate machine operation so that the discrete contacts remain populated in the printed-circuit boards 13.
