Braille, Katakana and like characters made up of varying numbers of characters segments, are uniformly embossed or printed with this velocity control sensing arrangement.

Mechanisms for the control of impression are well known and incorporated in many typewriters and the like. The sensing arrangement here is illustrated as effective for the control of an arrangement in a Braille embosser, such as disclosed by G. T. Slaughter in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin Vol. 9, No. 9, February 1967, pages 1196-1198 and 1205. Those skilled in the art will adapt to other arrangements as desired.

The velocity control mechanism 10 is conventional. Six solenoids 11...16 are arranged in an embossing machine for embossing characters having from one to six bosses (frequently termed dots). Six switches 21...26 are closed in seven permutations from 0 (spaces) to 6 by the depression of a key, or the receipt of an incoming electric signal. The a power supply 28, and a resistor 30 energize the solenoids for selecting the desired embossing pins, not shown, prior to energization of an embossing die, not shown, under control of means not shown that operate in conjunction with the velocity control mechanism 10.

The force of the die is varied by the velocity control mechanism 10, in response to the magnitude of the current flowing through the resistor 30 or other sensing element used. The voltage drop across the resistor 30 is applied to a current driver circuit 32. A solenoid winding 34 is energized for attracting an associated plunger 36 to the degree indicated by the current in the resistor 30, which reflects the number of bosses to be raised. The plunger 36 is mechanically coupled to the velocity control mechanism 10. This arrangement as thus far described is sufficient for proper embossing.
