Abstract

A single magnetic head assembly having both read and write elements is provided in a rotating head helical scan tape drive. The center lines of the read write elements are offset and displaced by the one half of a write track width, such that for every two revolutions of the rotary head drum, the tape is moved a distance that is equal to the width of a written track.

Magnetic Recording Transducer with Read and Write Elements

A single magnetic head assembly having both read and write elements is provided in a rotating head helical scan tape drive. The center lines of the read write elements are offset and displaced by the one half of a write track width, such that for every two revolutions of the rotary head drum, the tape is moved a distance that is equal to the width of a written track.

The head assembly is formed with a common center element 10 that determines the position of the read and write elements. Two identical legs 12 are provided to finish the head surface, and close the magnetic path. The head is made from a ferrite with an air bearing surface for effecting head-to-tape separation.
