Assume that different sources communicating with the same destination require different functional support. It is, therefore, necessary to identify both the source and destination along with each transmission request.

Function Selection Using Source and Destination

A technique is described for the function selection using source and destination identifiers in a multipath network. Assume that different sources communicating with the same destination require different functional support. It is, therefore, necessary to identify both the source and destination along with each transmission request.

There are two conditions under which the above assumption holds true:- Firstly; when the method of presentation of a transmission request implies different function capability from the processors in the network between the sources and destination. Secondly; when the same functional capability is implied but the distribution of subfunctions across the processors in the network is different for the different sources.

Both sources issue a request implying function F2 = f1 + f2 + f3. However , the function distribution for A connected to E is that C does f1 and D does f2f3, whereas for B connected to E the distribution is C does f1f2 and D does f3, then when a request arrives at D from C for E, D must select by source whether to form f2f3 or just f3.

The above ways in whch subfunctions, required to be performed in a given processor, can validly be different on a source-destination basis. This is due to a function distribution aimed at the efficient use of a processor's resources, for static or dynamic traffic loads, or due to the rerouting of requests because of failure of a...
