Head to Web Contact Adjuster

This arrangement affords an accurate and uniform force for maintaining a web in proper contact with a rotating head.

Body members 12, 14a, 14b, and 16 are arranged to support a rotating head 20 and leave a narrow channel, as shown, for a web 22 to pass around a portion of the head 20. As shown, the web 22 has a magnetic record track and electromagnet transducers 24, 26 arranged for recording on and reproducing from the magnetic track. An anvil 28 and a blade 32 are arranged for selectively severing the web 22.

In order to maintain the proper pressure between the head 20 and the web 22, a band 30 of resilient material, preferably MYLAR* is arranged in the channel below the web 22. One end of the band 30 passes between a block 34 and the blade 32 where it is held firmly, and terminates at a clamp 36 holding the hand 30 even more securely. The other end of the band 30 is held in a clamp 38. The latter clamp 38 is arranged in a block 40 carried in a recess in the body member
12. The block 40 is shaped to prevent rotation and to permit in-and-out movement under control of an adjusting screw 42.

Alternately, the band 30 may be of flexible material not particularly resilient in the longitudinal direction and a coil spring may be arranged to apply tension to the block 40.

This arrangement allows adjustment for webs 22 of differing thickness as well as for proper contact pressure. * Trademark of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.
