Abstract

Small, high quality, round holes having excellent entrance and exit openings can be drilled by a laser in hard materials by sandwiching the workpiece between backup sheets. Preferably, the workpiece and adjacent backup sheet are both lapped at the adjacent surfaces. The workpiece may either be sandwiched between a pair of backup sheets to provide quality openings at both the entrance and exit ends of the hole or be combined with a single backup sheet only at one end of the hole.
