This scheme simplifies transfer of data between major loop 10 and minor loop 12 in a two-dimensional magnetic bubble shift register.

Current pulses IA and IB applied to current carrying conductors A and B overlying the magnetic shift register, as illustrated by the arrows, maintain data bubbles moving in the major loop 10 and minor loop 12. When data bubbles are to be shifted from major loop 10 into the minor loops 12 or vice versa, the current pulsing of the current carrying conductors A and B is stopped to allow data bubbles in the minor loops to travel along paths 18 instead of paths 10. After the data has been shifted the permalloy patterns A and B are again pulsed, to cause the data bubbles to move along paths 10 and 12 once again.
