Illustrated is a ribbon feed and ribbon cartridge arrangement suitable for use on a typewriter, such as the IBM "Selectric" typewriter.
Print shaft 10 rotates and causes follower 12 to oscillate in the direction of its arrow. At the same time follower 14 is caused to reciprocate along its axis as indicated.
The ribbon feed mechanism is comprised of body 20 and top plate 22. Mounted between body 20 which is mounted on the print carrier and top plate 22 is a slide block 24 with an aperture 26. Also mounted in a frustroconical shaped hole 28 is a frustrum of a cone 30 having extending from the side thereof, a leaf spring 32 which engages ratchet wheel 34. Ratchet wheel 34 being formed together with gear 36 and engaging gear 38, causes the rotation of drive shaft or drive stub 40.
The ratcheting movement and gear drive is accomplished by the oscillation of follower 12 through hole 42 and engaging hole 26, causing slide block 24 to reciprocate in the direction of the indicated arrow, thereby causing leaf spring 32 to act as a ratchet pawl and drive ratchet 34 in a clockwise direction.
Top plate 22 is provided with a lug 50 and retaining flanges 52 to insure appropriate positioning of the cartridge thereon. It is also provided with an aperture 54 for admitting the forked portion of follower 14.
The ribbon cartridge is composed of the bottom housing portion 60 having a chamber 62 for storage of a stuffed fabric ribbon. Also mounted within the housing 60...
