Developer Paper Catcher

A paper catcher is employed in the developer unit of an electrostatic copier machine to prevent misfed paper sheets from engaging the moving parts of the developer unit, thereby preventing developer mix contamination by the paper.

A rotating drum 11 bearing an electrostatic image thereon is developed with toner particles applied by developer unit 13. Developer unit 13 includes a magnetic brush applicator roller 15 for applying developer material including toner to the surface of the drum 11. It further includes a magnetic conveyor roller 17 for conveying developer material to the magnetic brush roll 15 and counterrotating augers 19 and 21, which stir the developer mix within the developer unit 13. Toner metering roll 23 applies fresh toner to the developer mix.

Should a misfed sheet of paper remain on drum 11 as the drum rotates past developer unit 15, it can be stripped therefrom by the magnetic brush roll 15 and forwarded into the developer unit 13. A foraminous paper catch 25 is located within the developer unit, to prevent the misfeed sheets from being contacted by the counterrotating augers 19, 21 and the conveyor roll 17. Such contact causes the sheet to be chewed up into small pieces, which contaminate the developer mix necessitating its replacement. The openings in the foraminous member 25 are large, enabling ready passage of the carrier and toner particles of the developer mix therethrough. Additionally, it is coated with a materi...
