Resilient Conveyor Roll

This conveyor roll for magnetic developer material has a resilient coating thereon to reduce developer wear.

The developer unit 11 of an electrostatic copying machine includes a magnetic brush developer roll 13, which applies developer material to a rotating electrostatically charged drum 15. The developer material which includes carrier beads and toner particles electrostatically adhering thereto, is transported to the magnetic brush roll 13 by a conveyor roll 17.

The conveyor roll has a magnet assembly 19 located thereunder which attracts the carrier beads to the surface of the conveyor roll 17. Conveyor roll 17 rotates from a sump area 21 to a location adjacent the magnetic brush roll 13, whereat the developer material is transferred from conveyor roll 17 to magnetic brush roll 13.

The conveyor roll 17 is a toothed profile aluminum extruded roll 23 having a thin (0.010 inch) coating of urethane rubber 25 placed thereon. Rubber coating 25 causes the surface of the roll 17 to be resilient to reduce impact on the carrier beads, and provides it with a high-friction surface for the purpose of conveying the carrier beads. The surface is smooth thereby reducing abrasive wear on the carrier beads.

Since the beads come through the developer gate 27 at a relatively low velocity to be picked up by the conveyor roll 17 rotating at approximately 45 inches per second, it is necessary that the impact of the roll on the carrier beads be reduced and tha...
