Abstract

In devices such as tape drives using helical placement or sensing of signals, guidance on the helix is important. The device produces complex helical guidance by simple linear lateral movements. Skew is the error in the angle of the tape center line with respect to the focus of a true helix of the specified pitch at the surface of the mandrel.

In devices such as tape drives using helical placement or sensing of signals, guidance on the helix is important. The device produces complex helical guidance by simple linear lateral movements. Skew is the error in the angle of the tape center line with respect to the focus of a true helix of the specified pitch at the surface of the mandrel.

The steering bearings shown are capable of imparting lateral motion to the tape. In the X direction, when these bearing operate differentially, the skew angle phi is controlled. When the bearings are operated in directional unison, the movement in the Y direction is controlled. Combinations of differential and unified lateral movement of the steering bearing completely define the angle and location of the helical portion of the tape.
