Abstract

This is a seed holder useful in Czochralski-type crystal growth. A seed crystal 10 is normally rectangular in shape and, in accordance with the present technique, has a wedge shape machined therein. The seed holder includes a fabricated chuck 12 which screws into a pull rod assembly, and a pin 14. The dimensions of seed 10 are such that it fits freely into the seed holder as shown in the drawing. Pin 14 is positioned while holding the seed 10, and after all elements are secured and put in place, the seed self-locks into position.

Seed Holder for Crystal Growth

This is a seed holder useful in Czochralski-type crystal growth. A seed crystal 10 is normally rectangular in shape and, in accordance with the present technique, has a wedge shape machined therein. The seed holder includes a fabricated chuck 12 which screws into a pull rod assembly, and a pin 14. The dimensions of seed 10 are such that it fits freely into the seed holder as shown in the drawing. Pin 14 is positioned while holding the seed 10, and after all elements are secured and put in place, the seed self-locks into position.

With this seed holder, there is no possiblity of the grown crystal 10 falling back into the melt. In addition, there is less handling of the seed, more precise orientation, simplicity of assembly, longer seed life, and self-locking of the seed in position with no risks to the attached crystal. The chuck and pin are preferably fabricated from molybdenum.
