Shown is HeNe laser which allows the pressure of the gas in the laser to be increased, while maintaining the optimum density in the plasma.

Fig. 1 shows a conventional coaxial HeNe laser with a central cylindrical discharge tube 1, forming the bore within which laser action is sustained. Surrounding the cylindrical discharge tube is the evacuated envelope 2 for thermally insulating the discharge tube from the ambient gases. The surfaces 3 of the evacuated envelope 2 may be silver coated to enhance the thermal insulating ability of the envelope. The thermal envelope 2 permits the laser to operate at a higher temperature thereby maximizing the operating pressure of the gas in the tube, thereby extending the useful life thereof.

An alternate structure is shown in Fig. 2, where the resistance heater wire 4 controllably raises the temperature of the gas within the cylindrical discharge tube 1, raising the pressure of the gas and thereby extending the useful life of the laser.
