Abstract

The leakage inductance of a power supply transformer 10 of Fig. 1 is used to smooth the regulated voltage output of the supply. Center-tapped transformer 10 supplies positive half-waves through a switching device 11 such as a transistor to load filter capacitor 12. Switching device 11 is turned on and off by suitable threshold detecting voltage and current responsive feedback circuitry 13. When switching device 11 is turned off, energy stored in the leakage inductance of transformer 10 is delivered to load filter capacitor 12 via intermediate transformer taps 15 and 16.

Fig. 2 shows an equivalent circuit that is satisfactory for applications where transformer 10 has a winding ratio of less than 2 to 1. RC circuit 17 dissipates energy stored in leakage inductance of transformer 10 that is not connected to bypass line 14.
