Anti Implosion Capsule Opening Tool

Described is an apparatus for eliminating the abrupt implosion which results from opening a diffusion capsule.

Fig. 1 shows the apparatus comprising cylinder 3 containing plunger 2, and upon which is mounted a suction cup seal 4 which may be applied to the outside of the evacuated diffusion capsule 1. The plunger 2, in the position shown in Fig. 1, has forced residual air from the region beneath the plunger and above the capsule 1. The plunger is raised by handle 7, within the sealed cylinder 3, as is shown in Fig. 2, thereby creating a partial vacuum within the cylinder.

When the plunger 2 is released, atmospheric pressure forces the plunger against the capsule 1. The contact point 5 on the face of the plunger 1, contacts the glass wall of the capsule 1, thereby breaking a small hole in the capsule. Implosion or blow-in through this hole cannot occur since the area around the hole is sealed by the seal 4. An air bleed valve 6 is then opened to slowly neutralize the vacuum within the capsule 1. By operation of the apparatus, the capsule 1 can be opened with a minimum amount of implosive force.
