Molding Fixture

This molding fixture is for use in molding a room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) material about a tubular metal core. The fixture's molding cavity is bottom filled through a cap which includes closable fill openings. Once closed, the fixture is stored during the relatively long RTV cure time.

Fig. 1 shows the molding fixture assembled and oriented in its preferred vertical position. Tubular metal core 10 is accurately aligned inside outer aluminum mold shell 12 by an upper plug 13 and a lower plug 14. These two plugs include locating shoulders for core 10. The fixture is mechanically held together by bolt 15. Tubular molding cavity 16 is defined by core 10 and shell 12.

The upper plug 13 includes a plurality of vent openings 17, whereas the lower plug 14 includes a plurality of fill openings 18. The lower plug 14 cooperates with a second movable valving plug 19. This valving plug is shown in its open position, wherein fill openings 18 communicate with an opening 20 which is adapted to cooperate with the RTV material filling nozzle 32, as shown in Fig. 2. When valving plug 19 is moved upward to its dotted line position, and clamped in this position, fill openings 18 are closed.

In Fig. 2, the molding fixture of Fig. 1 has been clamped to a filling fixture by releasable arms 30. Handle 31 has been manipulated to bring filling nozzle 32 into cooperative relation with the molding fixture's opening 20. Valving plug 19 is in its lower position and RTV ma...
