Abstract

The desired device 10 is chosen by picking an associated electromagnet 12. Inhibiting the magnet armature 14 from moving inhibits release. The interlock prevents motion of the armature 14 until the desired magnet 12 receives an electrical signal. A small reed 16 of magnetic material is positioned under the magnet armature 14, spring loaded against the yoke 18. A secondary transverse core 20 directs flux toward the reed 16 placing it in a magnetic flux path.

Selection Pin Interlock

The desired device 10 is chosen by picking an associated electromagnet 12. Inhibiting the magnet armature 14 from moving inhibits release. The interlock prevents motion of the armature 14 until the desired magnet 12 receives an electrical signal. A small reed 16 of magnetic material is positioned under the magnet armature 14, spring loaded against the yoke 18. A secondary transverse core 20 directs flux toward the reed 16 placing it in a magnetic flux path.

When the coil 12 is energized the reed 16, being of less mass, is initially drawn horizontally toward the coil 12, positioning it under a slot 22 in the armature 14. At this time, current in the coil 12 reaches a level such that the armature 14 begins to move vertically downward. Since the reed 16 is now positioned under the slot 22, the armature 14 is allowed to seat on the yoke 18.

Where it is imperative to select only one of several devices by selection of one of several magnets and prevent accidental selection of others, a low-mass interlock may be used.
