Abstract

This stepper comprises a pawl 10 for engaging the teeth 12a of a ratchet wheel 12 fixed on a shaft 14, which drives an incrementing roll or wheel 16 for a document card 18. Pawl 10 is carried by a swingable pawl carrier 20 having an armature 22 in maximum misalignment with the core 24 of an electromagnet 26, when carrier 20 is in a pawl disengaging position (swung counterclockwise from its illustrated position), so that a high-starting torque is given by pawl 10 on ratchet wheel 12 and wheel 16 for initially starting movement of card 18.

This stepper comprises a pawl 10 for engaging the teeth 12a of a ratchet wheel 12 fixed on a shaft 14, which drives an incrementing roll or wheel 16 for a document card 18. Pawl 10 is carried by a swingable pawl carrier 20 having an armature 22 in maximum misalignment with the core 24 of an electromagnet 26, when carrier 20 is in a pawl disengaging position (swung counterclockwise from its illustrated position), so that a high-starting torque is given by pawl 10 on ratchet wheel 12 and wheel 16 for initially starting movement of card 18.

Pawl 10 is swingably mounted at 28 on carrier 20. Spring 30 is provided between the back end of pawl 10 and a projection on carrier 20, for holding the forward end of pawl 10 yieldably in engagement with ratchet wheel 12. An overtravel hook 32 is provided on carrier 20 for engaging with the teeth 34a of a ratchet 34 fixed on shaft 14.

Carrier 20 is swung about point 36, and a spring 38 acts to swing carrier 20 counterclockwise. A stop 40 limits the clockwise movement of carrier 20. A serrated detent wheel 42 is fixed on shaft 14, and a spring-loaded detent roller 44 cooperates with the serrations of wheel 42. A pressure roll 46 is yieldably held by spring 48 to have a pressure nip with roll 16.

When electromagnet 26 is energized, it acts on armature 22 to swing carrier 20 clockwise against the action of spring 38 to abut stop 40. Pawl 10 is thus moved into engagement with a tooth 12a...
