Abstract

An important part of an ink jet printer is the charge plate which is used for putting charge on the drops of ink. The charge plate consists of an array of holes called charge tunnels, corresponding in number and configuration to the nozzle array of the printer. Each tunnel is metallized and connected to an edge connector by thin film conducting lines. Each charge tunnel, however, must be electrically isolated from the remaining charge tunnels.

An important part of an ink jet printer is the charge plate which is used for putting charge on the drops of ink. The charge plate consists of an array of holes called charge tunnels, corresponding in number and configuration to the nozzle array of the printer. Each tunnel is metallized and connected to an edge connector by thin film conducting lines. Each charge tunnel, however, must be electrically isolated from the remaining charge tunnels.

Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of a charge plate 2 having metallized charge tunnels 4, 6, and 8 formed therein. Included are thin film conducting lines 10, 12, and 14 connected to the tunnels 4, 6, and 8, respectively, and to an edge connector, not shown.

Generally, the charge plate 2 is formed by the steps of: 1, machining a workpiece such as a phenolic board to form the charge plate 2, including forming the charge tunnels 4, 6 and 8; 2, metallizing the entire workpiece and tunnels; 3, delineating the conducting lines 10, 12 and 14 to the tunnels, i.e., one line per tunnel, by photolithography; and 4, etching away metallized portions not delineated by the line pattern.

Fig. 2 illustrates a workpiece 16 which is formed into a charge plate by the steps of: 1, drilling a tunnel 18 and forming a depressed area 20 where the conducting lines are to be formed; 2, metallizing the entire workpiece 16 including the hole 18 and depression 20, as indicated by the area 22 shown in Fig. 3, which is a...
