Abstract

Illustrated is a rotate drive mechanism for translating the lateral translation motion of barrel cam 10 into rotary motion of type element 12. Barrel cam 10 is mounted on shaft 14 for rotation therewith and axial translation therealong. Axial translation of cam 10 is caused by engagement with cam follower 16 which is fixed spacially with respect to frame 32.

Rotate Drive Mechanism

Illustrated is a rotate drive mechanism for translating the lateral translation motion of barrel cam 10 into rotary motion of type element 12. Barrel cam 10 is mounted on shaft 14 for rotation therewith and axial translation therealong. Axial translation of cam 10 is caused by engagement with cam follower 16 which is fixed spacially with respect to frame 32.

As cam 10 translates along shaft 14, cam follower tab 18 moves switchable rack 20 therewith. Switchable rack 20 is pivotally and slideably mounted on shaft
22. Formed into the upper surfaces of the arm portions of rack 20 are grooves 24 and 26. Grooves 24 and 26 may selectively engage drive pins 28. Four pins are attached to support member 30 which, in turn, is pivotally supported by frame member 32 to drive rotate shaft 34 which, in turn, is drivingly engaged with print element 12.

The shifting of rack 20 along the axis of shaft 22 by the translation of cam 10, acts to rotate support member 30 through engagement of grooves 24 or 26 and one of pins 28. The shifting of rack 20 reverses the direction of rotation of shaft 34, and thus provides a plus and minus rotate condition from the same lateral displacement of cam 10.

Case shift may be accomplished by switching rack 20 to engage groove 26 after groove 24 has driven pin 28 to its maximum displacement position, which likewise is the maximum displacement position of rack 20 and cam 10.
