Precision Coplanar Lapping and Polishing Fixture

This coplanar lapping and polishing fixture permits a succession of lapping and polishing steps on different machines, without removal of the workpiece.

Short lengths of glass tubing 1, where ink jet nozzles are being prepared, are affixed to mounting block 2 with wax. Mounting block 2 is placed on a surface plate, not shown, and adjusted by leveling screws 3, so that the surface to which the tubing 1 is affixed is parallel to the surface plate. The thickness of tubing 1 is measured using a gauge block and a dial indicator.

Block 2 is then mounted into a holder 4 having an adjustable threaded stop 5 and a thread lock nut 6. Block 2 is adjusted by threaded stop 5 and lock nut 2 to a predetermined distance relative to reference surface 7 of holder 4. This adjustment permits a predetermined amount of tubing 2 to be removed.

The mounting block 2 and the holder 4 are lapped as an assembly, to insure that the block 2 mounting surface and the reference surface 7 are coplanar prior to mounting the workpieces. A single dowel pin in block 2 that is a loose fit with a hole in holder 4, assures that the relationship between the two parts remains the same to maintain the accuracy.

The assembly is then placed in a lapping machine having lapping plate 8, where the desired amount of material is removed. The tubing 1 is polished by removing the assembly and placing it in a polishing machine.
