U.S. Patent 3,821,815 describes methods and systems useful for the fabrication of magnetic film transducers with accurate throat heights. In general, this is accomplished, for example, by including a conductor in each transducer in the vicinity of the throat, the conductor initially being higher that the intended final throat height. U.S. Patent 3,821,815 describes methods and systems useful for the fabrication of magnetic film transducers with accurate throat heights. In general, this is accomplished, for example, by including a conductor in each transducer in the vicinity of the throat, the conductor initially being higher that the intended final throat height. Two or more adjacent transducers including such conductors are in common electrical contact by one or more common electrical conductors.

In operation, electric current is passed through external leads to the conductors including the common conductor. The throat height of the transducers is then adjusted, for example, by removal of material from the transducers by grinding. During grinding, the changes in electrical characteristics in the conductors are monitored through the external leads.

Changes in electrical characteristics are used to determine and control how grinding proceeds. For example, rough, relatively fast, grinding may progress until the common conductor between two or more heads is rendered discontinuous. Then, slower and/or finer grinding continues until the electrical characteristics of each conductor reach a predetermined value, corresponding to the desired throat height.

In this modified schematically shown system, two or more parallel conductors 2 and 4 intended for use generally normal to a recording media are associated in a single transducer, or in two closely adjacent transducers.
