Abstract

Corotating flexible magnetic storage discs 1, arranged coaxially in a laminate stack, are secured to rotating hub 3 by studs 5 which fit through mounting holes 1a-1d in the discs. Hub 3 connects with shaft 3a of motor 3b. Thin spacers 7 are mounted on the studs 5 to establish small spacing intervals between the discs 1.

Compressed air circulated through these spacing intervals stabilizes the rotation of the discs 1 to facilitate: location of the desired access interface, operation of a not shown access mechanism relative to such interface, closure of the stack upon disengagement of the access mechanism, and cleansing of debris from the disc surfaces.

A not shown aligning mandrel that fits snugly in the large central holes of the discs and into a recess in hub 3 establishes concentricity of the discs 1 and hub
3. Clamping ring 9 holds the discs in place after removal of the mandrel. Cover plate 11 seals the end of the cylindrical cavity space bounded by the central holes in the discs 1.

Air inlet 13 communicates compressed air to the central disc cavity, through stationary housing 15, creating a uniform outward air flow between the discs 1 with the above-mentioned effects and utility.
