Polycrystalline AuNi Magnetic Material for Magnetic Bubble Domain Devices

A class of compounds defined as Au(x)Ni(1-x) where x is between 0 and 0.8 is described. Films of these materials possess magnetic properties such as uniaxial anisotropy and "bubble-type" hysteresis loops. These AuNi films are polycrystalline.

A film of Au(0.2)Ni(0.8) was formed by thermal evaporation. This film had a T(c) = 200 degrees C, and a cubic lattice constant a(o) = 3.649 angstroms. This film was heated to a temperature of +200 degrees C and no change in any of its properties was observed. The magnetic properties of these compounds may be adjusted by varying the composition. An 800 angstroms thick film with this composition was observed to possess magnetic bubbles with 800-1000 angstroms diameters. These films offer the potential of a 10/9/ bits/cm/2/ storage density memory device.
