Abstract

A magnetic coating composition comprising magnetic particles, for example, CrO(2) and Fe(2)O(3), dispersed in a synthetic water-base resin of oil-free polyester and a melamine resin is described. It has been observed that CrO(2) pigmented coatings made with this polyester-melamine resin system, are less sensitive to thermodegradation than prior art compositions containing CrO(2) and other binders. Examples of specific compositions are set forth below. Example No. 1 FE(2)O(3) 185 g Water soluble, oil-free polyester 90 g (AROLON* 465). Melamine resin (UFORMITE** MM83). 150 g H(2)O, distilled or deionized. 210 g Example No. 2 CrO(2) 123 g Water soluble, oil-free polyester 60 g (AROLON 465). Melamine resin (UFORMITE MM83). 100 g H(2)O, distilled or deionized. 140 g.

Measured amounts of the magnetic pigment, the water soluble, oil-free polyester, the melamine resin and water are placed in a ball mill and mixed for an extended period of time, for example, 16 hours.

The aqueous dispersion thus formed is spin-coated onto the substrate, for example, glass.
