Uniform Load Deadweight Compliant Guide

Shown is a continuous compliant guide for uniformly loading a web against a fixed edge guide. Uniform-load continuous compliant guides are described in detail in U. S. Patent 3,850,358. Shown is yet another species of such a guide generically protected by patent 3,850,358.

In Fig. 1, web 10 is wrapped about a guide 12 having an air bearing surface to support the web 10. The web 10 is uniformly loaded against the fixed edge 14 of the guide by a plurality of compliant deadweight fingers 16.

A cross section of the guide 12 and one of the deadweight compliant fingers 16 is shown in Fig. 2. The air bearing surface of the guide 12 is provided by a foil 18 containing holes, not shown, which communicate to pneumatic channels 20. Thus the web 10 rides on an air bearing and is urged against a fixed edge 14. Uniform loading of the web 10 against the fixed edge 14 is provided by the deadweight compliant fingers 16.

Deadweight compliant finger 16 has an upper thick member 26 to provide the deadweight for the guiding function. The deadweight finger 16 is positioned by pins 28 which pass through the finger 16. The fit between the pins 28 and finger 16 is loose, so that the deadweight finger 16 can rotate about the pivot point 30 laterally to the web 10 and about an axis perpendicular to the web 10.
