Contoured Vacuum Column

Shown is a vacuum column for providing the dual function of isolating tape motion from the inertia of a tape reel, while at the same time edge guiding the tape. In Fig. 1, tape reel 10 supplies tape 12 to the vacuum column 14. Vacuum column 14 has an entry bearing 16 and an exit bearing . 18.

In an environment where the tape reel 10 is automatically positioned, lateral tolerances on the positioning of the reel may vary 30 mils at point A. Coming out of the vacuum column at point D, it is desirable to hold the tape to a lateral position with a tolerance of 5 mils. This transition in tolerances for tape lateral position can be taken up in the vacuum column by contouring the side walls of the vacuum column.

Fig. 2 is a view looking down into the mouth of the vacuum column 14. Wall 20 is the entry wall, and wall 22 is the exit wall.

Side walls 24 and 26 of the vacuum column are contoured, so that they taper from a nominal center position plus 50 mils at the entry wall 20 to a nominal center position plus 5 mils at the exit wall 22.

The side wall 24 is preformed into the tapering contour, while the side wall 26 consists of a flexible shim 26A supported by a stiff wall 26B.
