Corona Apparatus

Corona apparatus for producing a uniform charge on the surface of a photoconductor 10 is shown.

The corona apparatus comprises a plurality of corona wires 12 and a screen grid 14 to regulate the level of charge applied to photoconductor surface 10. A source of clean air flow 16 is provided to prevent the accumulation of contaminating material, such as air-borne dust particles within the corona apparatus. The air flow takes the path shown by the arrows in the drawings. The air, along with the contaminating material, is extracted at opening 18 over two paths at opposite edges of housing 20.

Side seals 22 are provided at the marginal edges of the corona unit. Side seals 22 contact the photoconductor 10 or drum surface outside the image area to prevent air flow from the sides of the corona unit, which would permit a disturbed flow of air through the corona, and thereby reduce the efficiency of the contamination control system.
