Extended Life Magnetoresistive Head

Redundant magnetoresistive read elements are switched in as previously used elements become worn for an extended life magnetoresistive head.

Prior magnetoresistive read elements were composed of a thin layer of magnetoresistive material etched into the form of a thin stripe, with two plated copper leads for electrical connection. By repeating this pattern over insulating layers, and at each repetition moving the pattern back so that when one element opens it is sensed and the next element which is at the proper distance for reading is switched in, and by using hard substrate materials, a head with very long term desirable wear characteristics may be built.
