Abstract

A spring-loaded guard that is retractable along the edge of a utility knife provides improved protection to the user. As seen in the figure, a handle 1 has a conventional blade 2 changeably secured thereto. The housing has a longitudinal opening 3 in which is mounted a retractable shaft 4, on which is mounted a pair of guard rollers 5 straddling knife blade 2. Spring 6 urges the shaft 4 to its extended position, as shown in solid lines. The shaft 4 is also grooved to cover the knife edge. In use, pressure applied to handle 1 toward the material to be cut causes rollers 5 to retract shaft 4, thus exposing the cutting edge of blade 2 in proportion to the applied pressure. The shaft 4 and rollers 5 continue to serve as a guard for the remainder of the knife blade 2.
