Wire Lap Machine

The purpose of this machine is to produce a perfectly sized hole in the center of a split carbide bushing. The machine comprises a base plate 10 on which is mounted a reversible switch 11, a motor 12, adjustable timing pulleys 13 and 14, a shaft 15 and a shaft holder 16. Bolted to the base plate 10 is, a front plate 17 with a V- groove along its length, and on top of the front plate 17 are a pair of spaced apart adjustable chuck spindles 18 and 19 and a centrally located lapping fixture 20 for the part to be worked.

Between the chucks 18 and 19 is strung a 0.004'' wire. The lapping fixture 20, through which the wire passes, includes two halves of split carbide bushings 22A and 22B and two wire guides 23 and 24 on either end of a sliding block 25 on the working fixture.

The wire is impregnated with diamond lapping compound, and the split bushing is confined in the fixture by a V-block cap 21. Then the sliding block 25 is traversed back and forth to produce the cutting action, thus lapping a clean round hole on both sides of the split bushing which has been EDM's to locate the center thereof. This machine can also be utilized to lap odd sized wire, and also to make different types of working fixtures to accommodate any type of round or radius part or tool.
