Sheet Positioning Apparatus

A sheet positioning apparatus is employed to prealign a sheet against two perpendicular registration surfaces, prior to the forwarding of the sheet to a utilization device.

A sheet, not shown, is fed over planar guide 13 in the direction of arrows 17 and 18 to leading edge registration surface 19 and side edge registration surface 23 by the canted feed roll 15 and spherical bearing member 25, which form a drive couple between which the sheet is forwarded. In order to sense proper sheet registration, surface 19 is pivotally mounted about shaft 35 supported by gate member 36. As the sheet contacts surface 19, it pivots about shaft 35 causing stop member 37 to pivot therewith. In its normal position, stop member 37 prevents member 39 from pivoting about shaft 41. When stop member 37 pivots from its normal position, member 39 is pivoted when the sheet pushes against side edge aligner surface 23 which pushes against member 39.

As member 39 pivots, switch 43 closes enabling the energization of solenoid
45. Energization of solenoid 45 pivots gate member 36 about shaft 47, causing surface 19 and gate fingers 24 to move in a downward direction out of the path of the sheet. The sheet is then forwarded by feed roll 15 in the direction of arrow 17 to the utilization device.
