Abstract

A cylinder 10 slideably mounted on a support shaft 12, a groove follower roll 14 carried by cylinder 10 and intermeshing with a lead screw 16, and a spring 18 holding follower roll 14 in forceful engagement with screw 16, provide a simple zero clearance carriage extending between screw 16 and shaft 12.

A cylinder 10 slideably mounted on a support shaft 12, a groove follower roll 14 carried by cylinder 10 and intermeshing with a lead screw 16, and a spring 18 holding follower roll 14 in forceful engagement with screw 16, provide a simple zero clearance carriage extending between screw 16 and shaft 12.

Cylinder 10 may carry, for example, an access arm 20 with a magnetic head 21 which move across a magnetic disk X as cylinder 10 moves along shaft 12. Bearing balls 22 and 24 are disposed between shaft 12 and cylinder 10, and these respectively move in oval raceways 26 and 28 provided in cylinder 10 as cylinder 10 moves along shaft 12.

Groove follower roll 14 is rotatably mounted on the end of an arm 30 fixed with respect to cylinder 10, and a follower roll 32 is disposed opposite roll 14 and bears on screw 16, being rotatably disposed on the end of an arm 34. A stud 36 extends through arm 34 and is screwed into arm 30, and spring 18 is disposed between arm 34 and the head of stud 36.

Rolls 14 and 32 bear against screw 16 on vectors A and B, and the balls 22 and 24 bear against rod 12 on vectors C and D. It will be observed that the vectors A and B are at about 90 degrees with respect to each other about the center of screw 16, on opposite sides of the center line 36 connecting the center of screw 16 and rod 12.
