Bubble Generator With Adjustable Bubble Size

The flow around ink drops in flight is analogous to the flow of a regular stream of bubbles in a liquid.

The figure illustrates a bubble generator 2 which is comprised of a liquid container 4 containing a liquid 6. A micrometer 8 is housed in the base of the container 4 by a seal 10. A glass disk 12 is attached to the end of the micrometer 8, and a glass capillary tube 14 is spaced from the disk 12 at an angle for directing a flow of gas against the disk 12, from a gas supply, not shown, for generating bubbles.

Variation of the distance of the glass capillary 14 from the disk 12 by adjustment of the micrometer 8, controls the time during the growth of a bubble at which the bubble breaks off. The breakoff time controls the size of the bubble released, and by varying the bubble size by the micrometer adjustments, a desired bubble Reynolds number can be selected. Synchronization of the bubble stream can be achieved by using a piezoelectric transducer in the gas supply circuit.

The bubble generator is a measuring device which measures the drag of bubbles when part of a stream, by observing the rise velocity of the bubbles. Accordingly, the drag of ink drops in flight may be determined by observing the rise velocity of the bubbles.
