Microwave Connector

A metallic washer provides improved impedance matching between an RF connector and a microwave integrated circuit board. It enhances the phase and amplitude characteristics of the system.

A metallic washer-shaped member 1 is bonded by solder 2 to the outer conductor 3 of a conventional coaxial connector 4, such as for example, a known connector type referred to as an SMA type. The thickness T and diameter dimensions of the center aperture 6 of member 1 are judiciously selected, so that member 1 is provided with a desired impedance characteristic, e.g., 50 ohms. The gap formed between the inner walls of aperture 6 and center conductor 5 are filled with a dielectric such as air. Member 1 is electrically connected by solder 2 to outer conductor 3 only and is not in electrical contact with center conductor 5. Member 1 is preferably made of KOVAR*.

C, spacer member 10 may be fabricated as an integral part of the outer conductor 30 of coaxial connector 40. Preferably, integral member 10-30 is mechanically bonded to the center conductor 50 by an electrical insulating glass frit 20.
