Abstract

The urethanes are elastomeric compounds made by condensing low-molecular weight polyesters or polyethers, which result in high-molecular weight chains. The esters are usually prepared by condensing succinic, aoipic, or sebacic acid with an excess of ethylene glycol. The low-molecular weight polymer is condensed with an aromatic di-isolyanate, such as 2,4-toluene di-isolyanate.

The urethanes are elastomeric compounds made by condensing low- molecular weight polyesters or polyethers, which result in high-molecular weight chains. The esters are usually prepared by condensing succinic, aoipic, or sebacic acid with an excess of ethylene glycol. The low-molecular weight polymer is condensed with an aromatic di-isolyanate, such as 2,4-toluene di- isolyanate.

Polyurethanes can be considered esters of dicarbamic acid, R(NHCOOH)(2) and a glycol, H(2) CH-CHOH-CH(2) (OH). They contain the basic functional grouping -NHCO. Generally, the polyurethane is made by reacting disolyanate and glycol.

The polyurethane elastomer can be formulated without any additives to promote flexibility and to inhibit brittleness. In addition, it can be extruded into tubing without having to use any mold releases. Thus, there are neither additives nor mold releases which can be leached from the tubing by any of the fluid handled thereby.

The resultant tubing is tough, resilient, transparent and material resistant. Fluids can be passed through such tubing without the possibility of being contaminated. The tubing can withstand extended periods of use and various applications such as in pump, millipore filter systems, particulate matter analysis in aqueous systems, solvent reclamation systems, peristaltic pump systems and automatic analytical analysis systems.
