Impact Printer

This impact printer allows printing on both sides of a form F in a single pass of the form using a single print unit, which includes a swingable hammer H, a type slug S and ribbons A and B.

When printing on the left side of form F, ribbon A is interposed between hammer H and type slug S and ribbon B is retracted. A type slug S having a normal image is selected under these conditions. When printing on the right side, ribbon B is interposed between form F and slug S and ribbon A is retracted. Under these conditions, a type slug S having a reversed (mirror) image is selected.

Hammer H may be a swing hammer as illustrated or may be any other flat- faced impacting device. Hammer H may also be a fixed platen if type slug S is moved in lieu of hammer H. Type slug S is a selectable type slug and may be provided on a drum, chain, typewheels, etc. Type slug S may also be any other raised character forming device, such as a wire matrix. Ribbons A and B may be replaced by other inking devices and should preferably be one-sided or used with moveable shields, so as to prevent ink from being transferred to hammer H or type S.

In the case of printing on both sides of the form, simultaneous printing of coincident portions of the characters can be achieved whether or not the characters are symmetrical. For example, dots coincident with each other can be printed with matrix print heads located on opposite sides of the form.
