Power Connector

A low-resistance, low-insertion force power connector capable of handling high current, for example in the 600 amp range, is provided. The present day male-female pluggable connectors are only capable of carrying relatively low amps/pin, for example up to 100 amps/pin, due to the relatively low-surface contact pressure.

The power connector is formed in the bus bar ends themselves by trimming and forming, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Prior power connectors consisted of a male-female connector connected to the cable, thus forming an additional interface. It will be appreciated that each additional interface affects the reliability of the overall arrangement.

The integral connector cut and swaged into the bus bar 9 and 9a is arranged to be hermaphroditic. Thus, the connection is made by placing a chilled ring 10 over the connector end and then sliding a mating connector part into the assemblage. The environmental temperatures cause the chilled ring 10 to shrink creating high-interface forces.

The chilled ring 10 is made of nickel-titanium alloy in the range of 53-57% nickel, which possesses unique properties along with excellent mechanical properties, for example, it has 90,000 psi yield strength. The most unique property is that the material of the ring 10 when chilled with a coolant, expands from it's normal state.
