The usual mode of access, is to insert a high-inertia deep-penetration blade between the disks at a selected pack interface located by sensory apparatus. This, however, may not be reliable in a pack having circumferential wobble and jitter components of motion greater than a disk thickness.

A pack of multiple flexible disks subject to continuous rotation is shown in an end view in the drawing. The usual mode of access, is to insert a high-inertia deep-penetration blade between the disks at a selected pack interface located by sensory apparatus. This, however, may not be reliable in a pack having circumferential wobble and jitter components of motion greater than a disk thickness.

This problem is corrected by placing a high-speed moving coil actuator assembly 1 in a position relative to the pack, such that a low-inertia shallow- penetration splitting member 2 can enter the pack quickly (in less than two milliseconds) after the desired interface is located. The speed of pack rotation is such that in an interval of two milliseconds or less the pack revolves through a very small angular arc, and the displacement of any interface longitudinally (parallel to the axis of rotation) is invariably less than a disk thickness.

The opening created by the element 2 is not sufficiently wide to accommodate a transducing head. However, it is sufficient to form a stable target opening for the deep penetrating higher inertia splitter blade 3.
