Abstract

This dynamic data set accessibility method allows file attributes to be changed before attempting to bring the file online, and permits such changes to be entered during execution of other programs. Accordingly, flexible access to data sets is provided on a low-cost entry system, thus affording unlimited file access during job execution.

Dynamic Accessibility for Online or Offline Diskette Data Sets

This dynamic data set accessibility method allows file attributes to be changed before attempting to bring the file online, and permits such changes to be entered during execution of other programs. Accordingly, flexible access to data sets is provided on a low-cost entry system, thus affording unlimited file access during job execution.

Using this technique, file attribute changes may be entered by an operator, whereupon a check is made to determine whether the volume containing the data set is online. If a volume is not online, the routine goes into a wait mode until a volume is brought on line (such as a disk mounted). When the volume online does not contain a valid data set, the routine also goes into a wait mode pending the change of the volume (such as the insertion of another disk) or for an error condition to be corrected. When the data set is found, the validity of the data is checked and if valid, the data is made available for execution use.
