Function Control Feature

This function control feature greatly reduces the control function keying required on a key entry device 10 by adding a feature processor 12 which is under the control of a user created stored program 14.

The key entry device 10 comprises a key entry device processor 16 under control of a keyboard 18, and displaying an output on a cathode-ray tube 20. A diskette drive 22 receives information from and supplies information to the key entry device processor 16.

The key entry device 10 without feature processor 12 or program 14 requires a great amount of control function keying by the operator, in preparation for or in conjunction with data input keying. In the key entry device 10, used alone, the input for the device 10 comes primarily from keyboard 18, and device functions are initiated by depressing the appropriate keys of keyboard 18.

Using a processor 12 and program 14 in conjunction with key entry device 10, as illustrated, provides an alternative means of initiating functions in key entry device 10. Instructions are taken from the user created stored program 14 and are presented to the device processor 16, which then completes execution of the instruction in exactly the same manner as if the request for the function came from keyboard 18.

In order that this capability can be interactive with input from keyboard 18, additional points of control are used to signal the feature processor 12 when to preempt normal keyboard input and execute...
