Serial signal sequences can be formed from a stream of magnetic bubbles guided along permalloy paths as shown, for example, in Fig. 1. Relatedly, a bubble stream can be deflected from one path to another under the influence of a localized magnetic field.

The device for altering the bubble stream path is termed a "dual-moded switch." In a first mode it is capable of cross-connecting a bubble stream from one path to another. In the other mode, the bubble stream is deflected or constrained to the same, or similar, loop or path.

Referring to Fig. 2, there is shown generically an apparatus for transposing one or more serial elements from a first coded-signal sequence with elements from at least one other coded-signal sequence comprising a plurality of dual- moded switches, and a matrix of orthogonal row and column conductors having a counterpart switch affixed at selected matrix cross-points. Each switch forms a conductive crossover between the row and column conductor to which it is affixed, only when the switch is in the first mode.

Since the switches are externally actuated, it is necessary to combine the switch matrix with means for setting the switches which would be supportive of parallel propagation of the sequences through the matrix, and for also selectively setting switches into the first mode so as to effectuate a transposition of path propagation between portions of two or more sequences....
