Multiturn Head

A batch fabricated magnetic head is constructed by adhesive bonding of wrought magnetic material on either a separate substrate or directly to the housing or center section of the head assembly.

Typical batch fabrication of magnetic read/write heads involves deposition, evaporation, etching, etc. steps, which may adversely affect the magnetic properties of the materials required in the magnetic circuit. The possibility of damage is reduced by adhesively bonding prefabricated wrought and directionally annealed magnetic material to a prepared substrate. The magnetic material will then retain its desirable magnetic characteristics when it is fabricated into a magnetic head, without the damaging conditions inherent in evaporation or vapor deposition of magnetic material.

The process involves the following steps: 1. Laminate and etch copper to a substrate to form the lower part of a winding. 2. Deposit glass or other insulation onto the copper. 3. Adhesive-bond wrought magnetic material, such as high Mu 80 (of a thickness about 0.0002 inch). 4. Etch the magnetic material to form the desired core shape using adhesive as an etch resist. 5. Remove the adhesive from the etch lines in areas where the copper portion of the conductor pattern is desired. 6. Vapor deposit or electroplate the upper winding and reinsulate as in step 2. 7. Adhesive-bond a second sheet of magnetic material and photoetch to the desired shape. ALT. 7. If desired, the second sheet can...
